Secondly, the nice folks here at EMR have given us the week off to enjoy our own celebrations so starting tomorrow (12/22) we won't be back in the EMR office til January 3rd, 2007!!

With that in mind, we'd like to give everyone out there a heads up and a preview for what's to come in the early days of oh-seven:

Irving has some videos up on Roxwel's Indievideocodes.com - "Situation" and "Jen, Nothing Matters to Me" are both featured and both have nifty Artist Commentary versions up, so you can hear the guys wax poetic about the video shoot and their crazy antics.

Here's a taste with "Situation" INCLUDING artist commentary:

Not to be overlooked in 2007

Irving made it onto several distinguished lists 0f 2006 including placing with "Death in the Garden, Blood on the Flowers" on the iTunes US "Best of 2006" Rock/Alt Indie Spotlight and most recently on Chartattack's Most Overlooked of 2006 list.

Chartattack lists them among other snubbed classics CSS - Cansei De Ser Sexy, Beirut - Gulag Orkestar and Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out Of This Country. The review compliments the record freely with "combines the psych-tinged sensiblilities of The Dandy Warhols with the oversexed swagger of Franz Ferdinand." Wowee! I think I'd like to have that printed on my tombstone.

We're gearing up for the holidays around here,
but we wanted to remind everyone to
enter the Space Needle iPod Shuffle Giveaway

Adventures at The Troubadour

So I was lucky enough to squeeze in to the sold out Irving and Silversun Pickups show last night, as a "crew member" (a title made laughable by my inability to describe Irving's van to the doorman, as well as my referral to Brent's cymbal case as 'this thing'). But oh well. I had to show up at The Troubadour at 5pm, and then ended up staying till about 1 am, so it was quite an experience.

Let me just say that SSPU is one of my favorite bands so I was a little star-struck. (Okay, I was a nerd.) But they are pretty damn nice and good friends with Irving, so about an hour in, I was setting up merch right next to their drummer Christopher, and everything was cool.

Until, that is, I discovered that the merch bin Irving had given me to set up was completely devoid of t-shirts. So I asked the band and they said "Oh yeah, they're in the van, we'll get 'em later." After which I wandered off to eat (good ole Hamburger Haven), and returned to find members of both bands watching a basketball game in the front bar. A little while later, everyone was up in the dressing room near the sound booth, smoking up a storm (under the NO SMOKING sign), and struggling with the bottle opener, which was hooked to the wall at a strange angle. (Brian from SSPU stood there and mocked me while I tried to get it to work.) Tigers Can Bite You showed up and chatted and ate the comp snacks - carrots and celery and dip. TCBY's Byron and Irving's Aaron discussed whether or not carrots do improve your eyesight or if it was all a myth, perpetrated by the government during WWII. (I'm still on the fence.)

Then the doors were opened and TCBY went on, so I rushed down to keep an eye on Irving's merch table. Only to realize they still had no shirts. The band was waiting on Brent and Alex to return, assuming one of them had the keys. Of course, one girl came immediately up to Irving's table and asked what size shirts we had. I told her none. Just kidding, I asked her to please, please come back later! In no time, Tigers were done and Brent had returned, with every intention of going to the van for the t-shirts. As far as I know.

But then Irving had to set up, because they were on next. A phone call to Brent proved he never made it to the van - he was onstage already, setting up drums. So I ran out and climbed up on the side of the stage to ask Aaron for the keys, to get the shirts myself. At which point, he started to laugh and said he was sorry, but they had lost the keys. !!?@#

Musicians, man.

So Irving went on! It was "If You Say Jump, I Will Say No", one of my favorites! ...But there was no sound from the keyboards. Sound guys scrambled up onstage to help Aaron while the band carried on without him. Steven decided to start singing the keyboard melody into the mike, which the crowd loved. It was definitely an enthusiastic crowd, so the show turned out to be a lot of fun. People who didn't even know Irving swarmed the merch table and asked "Is this the band on now? Okay, let me get the cd." The t-shirt girl returned and I sold her the display. (Thank god she was a medium.)

Silversun Pickups were next and they are truly stars these days. Steven wandered onstage about halfway through the set and started playing around on the synthesizer with Joseph, which the crowd also loved. Brian pulled a girl up onstage to tell jokes, which the crowd didn't love. (She was bad.) The sound was pretty fantastic the whole night so cheers for The Troubadour! Luckily, someone found Irving's van keys at the end of the night (otherwise they might've had to live there.) I got a free SSPU shirt from Christopher (score!) and went home with ears buzzing.

I've been yawning a lot today.

Irving is weird, we're sure of it

After a KILLER show last nite at the Troubadour, Irving takes off for the holidays following a STELLAR 2006.

But not without first treating us to a fun tour story from a few years back featured on Rightround.com. This one had us all laughing out loud.

Just a word: if you're interested in helping out with the Irving street team in the new year, email Tim with your info and he'll hook you up with all the particulars.

Great Northern ROCKED last nite!

If you were lucky enough to be at Pershing Square last night for the latest installment of Spaceland on Ice featuring The Submarines and Eenie Meenie's own, Great Northern, then we can bet you went home in a good mood!

The evening begin with a great set by the Submarines, showing their diversity by including some holiday-style instrumentation. Then with a short break and a quick go-round of the old zamboni, the late session skaters took the ice and Great Northern took the stage.

They played obvious crowd favourites: Home, The Middle and Low is a Height. And by the end of the set they'd easily won over everyone in the crowd who just showed up to skate or had never heard GN. The new record is due out in May and the live versions we got to hear last nite were a great preview of the upcoming tour.

Check out the Eenie Meenie myspace page for a slideshow courtesy of Modernbrit and yours truly.

Here's another pic, this one of Schimonie and friends skating. Word has it there were no bouts with gravity for the girls as they went around and around to the sounds of Great Northern.

Tonite head on over to El Cid on for Goldenboy w/ Fishtank Ensemble and Dressy Bessy.

Holiday cheer Eenie Meenie style

The time is NOW to get your orders in for the very special Eenie Meenie Records Holiday packages for the Irving fan, vinyl fan or EMR fan on your list!

Miny Moe's very own ModernBrit played photog to yours truly for a few of the pics and they look just lovely (if I do say so myself). So try to imagine yourselves holding onto that colored vinyl collection or wearing your very own "Allergic to Rock" Oranger bracelet and tell your favourite Santa to get those orders in now to have them ASAP.

Great Northern should be great tonite at the Spaceland on Ice show with the Submarines. If you're in the neighborhood stop on by or hit up the red line. It's $2.50 roundtrip and no parking to worry about AND it puts you off RIGHT in front of the venue/skating arena. Great music and home in time to catch the late shows.

Songs heard in the office today included:

Cartoon Music for Super Heroes, Albert Hammond Jr.
So Lonely, The Police
Suspicious Characer, The Blood Arm
Snowball, Test Icicles
Home, Great Northern
Dead Souls, Joy Division
Kids in America, The Young Knives
1 am, The Subways

Ice Skating

The very phrase reminds me of Natalie Portman in an alligator costume, but I'm sure to be a whole lot less graceful, hugging the wall tonight at Pershing Square's Spaceland on Ice. I can't even recall the last time I went skating, roller or ice... Although there was a period in 7th grade where my P.E. class would take us to the roller rink every other Friday, where, lucky us, we got to skate around to the sounds of Snoop Dogg and Dre. It was a little like this, with less glitter. (Quite enlightening for someone raised on The Kinks.)

So hooray for skating to Great Northern and The Submarines instead! I got the Soft Songs LP by Jack Drag off a friend about a year ago and then was introduced to The Submarines just a few months ago, without realizing for awhile that he was in it. He and Blake Hazard were actually divorced and got back together, so the album's lyrics can almost make you cry, even though there was a happy ending.

Great Northern's music is so atmospheric, I imagine there will be some pretty euphoric gliding going on. (...Around me, as I fall.) Looking forward to it!

Damn, I forgot my scarf.

Almost in the violet...

If you haven't made your way over to Mog.com yet, I think it's about time you do.
Go ahead, we'll wait.
It's a place where you can share your digital music collection with other music lovers and musicians. Ben Gibbard is a user and no need to ask: YES it's actually him. Mog has a policy that you cannot set up profiles for "known bands" of which you're not a member. They verify everything. So when you write a message to David Lowery, yes, you're writing to the Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker David Lowery. It's like the way myspace was before it got HUGE. When we used to be able to chat with Dane Cook and get comments from the Lostprophets. Dang it. Don't you hate that?

Well I'm here to help ruin Mog so head on over there and show off the tunes in your iPod. But beware: Mog-O-Matic makes public EVERYTHING in your Itunes collection. In other words, if you're harbouring a secret Lionel Richie folder or if you like to hear a little Winger every now and again - the world will know if you leave it in your Itunes. Also, you can create your own widgets, so get creative. Search Mogs Like Me to find other people in the same town or with the same musical taste. I've heard that people have even found rides to shows this way. Hey, if you're both going to the show anyway, better two people in one car. It can help you save some money and the environment. But be careful, I wouldn't ask "D&D Master of Mayhem" for a ride unless you know him IRL. And no one does.

When you become a Mogger, look us up: mog.com/eeniemeenierecords and make us your trusted friend. Why trust us? There are several reasons all listed on our page. We're trying to move our Mog Meter Status up from Below the Radar into a more respectable range (in the violet) so help a mogger out.

Songs heard in the office today included:

Stargazer, Siouxsie and the Banshees
Words Make You Tired, Headlights
Free Money, Patti Smith

Suck, Nine Inch Nails
Blackbird at Heart, Goldenboy
Man in a Suitcase, The Police
Beautiful Ways, Pat McGee Band
Country Girl, Ray Lamontagne
All of a Sudden, Run Run Run
Scared, Albert Hammond Jr.
